James Leonard Blayney (1922 - 2003)

Leonard was born in High River, Alberta, Canada to Doctor York Blayney and his wife Isabel Vivian Butchart. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1944 and immigrated to the United States where he worked for Philco in Pennsylvania. In 1952 he accepted a job offer as an Electrical Engineer for the Seismological Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California.
With his wife, Frances, they raised their two sons, Stephen and Randall in the San Fernando Valley (north of downtown Los Angeles). Then, in 1977, Leonard and Fran purchased a 160 acre parcel of desert land about 14 miles east of Palmdale, California on the eastern slopes of a mountain range called the Lovejoy Buttes. They both fell in love with the natural beauty of the Mojave desert and soon decided to leave the noise and congestion of the city behind and moved into a 40' mobilehome parked on the slopes of their mountain.
While others saw a barren wasteland, they saw the magnificence of God's creation. They enjoyed the warm summer evenings stretched out on their lounge chairs, sipping on a brandy slush while watching the wildlife and listening to the faint cry of the coyotes.
Wanting to share the beauty of their land with others, they decided to promote filming activities and for that reason the Blayney Ranch was formed. As a tribute to both Leonard and Fran, their sons continue to operate the ranch making it available for use by the film industry.

Frances Pearl Blayney (1928 - 1992)

Frances was born in High River, Alberta, Canada to Nicolas Albert Weiser and his wife Latica Hogh. The doctor delivering Frances happened to be York Blayney - Leonard's father.
After having raised her two sons, Fran joined the Los Angeles Unified School District as a cafeteria worker. A few years later she passed her cafeteria manager's exam and took charge of the cafeteria at Dyer Street Elementary School.
After her retirement, she focused her attention on her volunteer work for the Palmdale City Library and the Women's Club. She also became involved in the politics of the Antelope Valley becoming an activist for property rights issues.
